The Sanöma are part of the Yanomami people. They inhabit the region of Awaris, Yanomami Indigenous Land, in the mountain forests of the extreme northwest of Roraima, Brazil. These mushrooms are a product of the traditional Yanomami farming system. This mix of more than 10 species of mushrooms is the result of a deep knowledge of the local ecology and management of the environment; knowledge that feeds and keeps the forest standing. The proceeds from the sale of the mushrooms are entirely destined to the Yanomami producing communities.
